Safe handling requirements and manual handling techniques
Manual handling results in 20% of all workers compensation claims in NSW. Types of injuries related to manual handling include:
- Muscle injuries
- Nerve injures
- Bone injuries
Manual handling is a big problem for workers in the workplace with inexperienced workers at greater risk. Manual handling injuries are not limited to those sustained by lifting or carrying heavy loads. A person can be injured when they are handling objects in a variety of ways, these include: pulling, pushing, holding or restraining. Good posture and lifting techniques can help reduce the risk.
Techniques need to be used to lift and carry heavy loads. Always bend your knees when carrying heavy things. Do not lift heavy things by yourself and always get someone to help you carry.
